If you or someone you love is struggling with substance abuse in Minnesota, it can be scary. However, there are well-proven ways to overcome an addiction. The first step often lies in drug detoxification. If you’re looking to participate in a drug detox program for Minnesota residents, you have a lot of options.

Drug detox, also known as detoxification, is the process by which your body eliminates the addictive substances in your system. Your body may go through withdrawal symptoms at this point, such as nausea, vomiting, hallucinations, shakiness, pain, and anxiety. These symptoms can be stressful and worrying, but your detox program will offer you methods of withdrawal management, such as medication.

A Minnesota drug detox program or a drug detox program in an out-of-state facility is an important first step in addiction treatment as it makes it easier to avoid substances. However, it’s not enough on its own. You will want to seek out drug rehab in Minnesota or elsewhere afterward to completely kick your addiction. If you’re unsure which detox and rehab programs will work for you, give us a call at (866) 274-4910. Our Addiction Specialists can provide you with the information you need to decide.

The two models of drug detox

Detox facilities use either of two basic models of detox. These are known as medical detox and social detox. It’s important to know the difference between the two.

Medical detox: Medical detox programs have doctors and nurses on hand to supervise patients while they go through the withdrawal phase of treatment. They can prescribe medication if necessary and make the patient comfortable and keep them safe.

Social detox: With social detox, medication is not usually necessary. The staff, comprised of counselors and nurses, help patients while they go through the withdrawal phase by offering individual and group counseling, as well as providing support and comfort.

The three steps of drug detox in Minnesota

Regardless of the type of facility you choose or the drug you want to detox from, there are generally three steps that all individuals going through withdrawal will experience during the detox process.

Evaluation: Upon choosing a facility, you’ll be evaluated. It will help to determine the appropriate treatment for you based on your health, your level of addiction, and any psychological issues you may have. Typically, your evaluation will cover your living situation, your relapse history, your willingness to make changes, your financial situation, any disabilities you may have, and other factors that could affect your treatment.

Stabilization: This is the process of transition where you’ll withdraw from the substance and be treated for the symptoms. This is often done using medications like methadone, buprenorphine, and naltrexone. These medications will help to reduce the severity of withdrawal symptoms, but they may also reduce the euphoric feelings you experience when using a drug, which can make it easier to resist using it.

Preparation for continuing treatment: It’s important to continue to seek a Minnesota drug rehabilitation program after detox. Otherwise, it’s easier to relapse and resume your drug use. You’ll be prepared to continue with counseling in the form of cognitive or behavioral therapy, group therapy, or individual psychotherapy, depending on your needs and situation.

If you’re ready to take on these steps and make a change, call one of our addiction professionals at (866) 274-4910. We’ll help get you on the right track toward treatment.

Determining the right level of care during drug detox

Depending on the results of your evaluation, there are multiple levels of detox that could be the right fit for you. Generally, there are 5 levels.

They are:

Level 1, Ambulatory detoxification without extended onsite monitoring: This the level of detox where it is safe to detox at home, but you must check in with a doctor or trained clinician at an outpatient program for scheduled appointments. These appointments may take place in Minnesota addiction treatment facilities, doctor’s office settings, an out-of-state facility, or at your home.

Level 2, Ambulatory detoxification with extended onsite monitoring: This level of care is similar to Level 1, but you’ll spend a set number of hours daily under observation at a drug detox facility in Minnesota or out-of-state. This level of care also gives you access to either registered nurses or licensed practical nurses for your care.

Level 3, Clinically managed residential detoxification: At this level, 24-hour stays at social detox are necessary at a facility. However, staff may not necessarily consist of doctors or nurses. Clinically trained individuals, nurse practitioners, and physician’s assistants may provide care. The level of involvement at these facilities varies, but they will refer you to medical facilities if the need arises.

Level 4, Medically monitored inpatient detoxification: Individuals at this level of detox require 24-hour monitoring by medical staff at a medical detox facility in Minnesota, or a drug detox facility that’s in another state. This level is more restrictive than being treated at a residential facility, and staff will be comprised of physicians and nurses.

Level 5, Medically managed intensive inpatient detoxification: This is the most intensive level of detox. Individuals at this level require around-the-clock medical monitoring in a hospital under acute care. Life support equipment and general hospital equipment is available in these settings, which may be necessary for severe withdrawal symptoms.
